3 Winter Snow Home Maintenance Tips

Watch the ice dams. Ice dams form because the edges of a homes roof are colder than the upper regions (where more insulation is below), causing ice to form around the eaves. Snow melts above, and the melted snow backs up behind a dam of ice, potentially causing leaks and permanent damage to the roof and home if youve ever experienced an ice dam on your roofline, you know what a nightmare it can be.

RBM Roofing and General Contracting in Randolph, New Jersey says preventing ice dams is easier than treating it. Here are some things that should take place:

  • Remove any debris from your gutters
  • Inspect your attic insulation and ventilation
  • Remove snow as quickly as possible using a roof rack

Look out for the trees. Snow in the trees may look pretty, BUT when snowfall settles on the limbs it can make the limbs heavy and more prone to breaking! If these trees are near your home it can cause major damage. Heres something you can do:

  • Brush off the snow from limbs with a broom (Dont Shake!)
  • Remove troubled branches when weather permits

Inspect Your Roof. Roofing is your main defense from the outdoors. It takes a real beating with the changing seasons. If your roof is older than 10 years it might require more roof repair. The smallest thing can lead to increased energy cost or leaks. Also, if left uninspected for years you run the risk of a complete re-roof. Here are some things you can do:

  • Visual Inspect for missing or bowed shingles
  • Look for any damaged shingles
  • Look for any discolored shingles.
  • Get a roof inspection

While you may able to do most of these task on your own, we recommendgetting a professional Randolph Rooferfor all roof repair task. RBM Roofing and General Contracting is well qualified to handle these tasks for you.
